thanks to all of you for pointing out what these subs are! This photo from my dad was one of the few that had no captions

How many U.S.and allied ships were sunk by Japanese submarines? Is it true that their torpedoes had a longer range then U.S. submarine torpedoes?

The submarine on the left is the 373 foot Japanese aircraft carrying sub I-14. The submarine on the right is the I-400, one of the two largest subs built up until that time at over 400 feet. The I-14 carried 2 Serian float planes destined for a planned attack on the Panama Canal. The I-400 carried 3 Serians. My father served on the Destroyer Escort USS Bangust and the I-14 surrendered to his ship at the end of the war. The ship they are moored to is the sub tender Proteus. That's a really great shot. I'd never seen a rear view of that scene before.

There seem to be two different types of boat here. And both of them have offset conning towers -- didn't know any US boats had that. These things are BIG, and they look like they have snorkels. Maybe late in the war?
