Our first port of call after embarking from Honolulu on the Norwegian Cruise Lines PRIDE OF AMERICA was Kahului on the island of Maui. On board ship on Sunday morning, October 20, we Road Scholars went to class and learned a lot about the history and people of Hawaii. In the afternoon a Road Scholar excursion took us to Iao Valley State Park on the Western side of the island. On Monday October 21 a Road Scholar excursion took us up to the top of Haleakala, a 10,023 foot extinct volcano. It was quite chilly up there. What is called a crater at the top is not really a crater. But it sure likes like a crater.
The volcanos of Maui did their explosive work long ago and left plenty of natural beauty on the island.
