After several train rides, a funicular ride and a bus ride we arrived in Koyasan, a sacred mountain for Japanese Buddhists where we got a taste of traditional Japanese hospitality and ritual. We stayed in a monastery connected to the Rengejoin Temple for 2 nights. We attended services featuring beautiful chanting and other engaging rituals. We ate delicious vegan dinners sitting on a cushion. We slept in a beautiful room with a view of one of the gardens. When we got to our room, the tea was ready to be served. The headquarters for Shingon Buddhism are in the town. During the one day we had to explore we went to a fascinating cemetary considered to be one of the most sacred places in Japan according to www.Japan-guide.com. We then went to the Kongobuji Temple.
