Just before 2 PM on Monday September 17th, Woodstock firefighters received an alarm of fire for a fire in a bedroom in a single family dwelling located at 249 Green Road in Woodstock. The Town of Woodstock is divided up into three fire districts consisting of the Muddy Brook Fire Department, The Woodstock Volunteer Firefighters, and the Bungay Fire Brigade. All three departments responded to the call on the initial alarm, with the Muddy Brook FD being first due. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke showing from the basement of a large two story wood frame rural dwelling. An initial attack line was stretched to a basement entry door on the “B” side of the structure, and heavy fire was encountered as firefighters made entry into the structure. Firefighters quickly brought the bedroom fire under control as additional personnel stretched more lines above the fire as well as getting the water supply established. It was determined early that a tanker shuttle would supply water to the fire scene. A remote fill site had to be established about a mile from the fire scene. Mutual aid was summonsed for engine/tankers from The Dudley, Webster, and Southbridge fire departments to assist Woodstock firefighters on scene with manpower and water supply. An quint and crew from the Quinebaug VFD was also responded to the scene to assist. One occupant was at home at the time of the fire and was injured. The female patient self extricated from the residence prior to the arrival of the fire department. She was treated by members of the Woodstock Volunteers Ambulance, and eventually took the advice of medical personnel on scene and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation of her injuries. They did not appear to be life threatening. The cause of the early afternoon fire is under investigation by Woodstock Fire Marshal Richard Baron. |
