Webster MA - Structure fire, 56 Chase Ave. - December 18, 2018
Shortly before 2:30 AM on Tuesday morning December 18th, Webster firefighters were alerted to a building fire located at 56 Chase Avenue on the Webster/Dudley town line. Webster police officers were the first to arrive on scene and found a raging house fire at the location. They began banging on doors of the two family dwelling to alert the residents, but all of the home’s residents had fled the building before the arrival of the first responders.
First due Webster firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy fire venting out two windows on the 2nd floor at the front of the building. The flames were driven by a 20-25 mph wind originating from the rear of the building, pushing the fire towards the front. Large clouds of thick, wind driven smoke were banked down into the street, at times obscuring the front of the building, apparatus, and firefighters.
Webster Fire Chief Brian Hickey was one of the first firefighters to arrive on scene, and he struck additional alarms to bring adequate manpower and equipment to battle the fast moving flames. Mutual aid was requested from the Dudley, Southbridge, Oxford, Charlton, Douglas and Quinebaug (CT) fire departments. These departments responded to the scene and provided assistance to the Webster jakes in bringing the massive fire under control. The fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes, but overhaul operations would take about another hour and a half. All of this was happening as the mercury hovered in the upper teens.
The cause of the fire appears to be electrical, according to Webster fire officials. No injuries were reported. Two families were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
