On Monday evening at approximately 5:30 PM, Webster firefighters were turned out to a report of a fire in the basement of a single family dwelling located at 80 Myrtle Avenue. Webster police officers arrived on scene first and reported back to responding firefighters that they could see a large volume of fire through the basement window of the balloon-frame dwelling. A 2nd alarm was struck while Webster jakes were enroute, summonsing the rest of their off duty firefighters and a crew and Engine from the neighboring Dudley FD. When Webster members arrived on scene, they immediately stretched a handline to the basement and quickly controlled the fire, which apparently started in some combustible that were store to closely to the hot water heater. Firefighters also had to battle a heavy smoke condition in the basement of the involved building. Dudley Fire arrived on scene and was tasked with checking the first and second floor for fire extension. None was found. All the occupants were out of the house prior to the arrival of first responders. No injuries were reported. Fire crews remained on scene for about 90 minutes overhauling and chasing hot spots. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental. |
