Shortly after 8:30 AM on Thursday October 25th, Webster firefighters were turned out to a reported structure fire in a housing area called North Village. The fire was reported in an apartment in a building located at 21 Village Way. Webster Fire Chief Brian Hickey arrived on scene first and found smoke showing from a ground floor apartment. Upon further investigation, he saw fire in the rear bedroom of the apartment, and the occupant was known to be using home oxygen in the dwelling. The Chief immediately struck a 2nd alarm. This brought all off-duty Webster firefighters in to the incident as well as an Engine Company from the neighboring Dudley Fire Department. An occupant of the apartment was removed from the doorway of the burning apartment by a maintenance worker prior to the fire department's arrival. Webster and Dudley firefighters quickly stretched handlines to the seat of the fire and brought the blaze under control in a short period of time. During overhaul, a burned out mattress was removed from the building and flooded with water. Black viscous smoke poured from the building for quite some time until fans could be brought in to displace the smoke. A very aggressive attack made for a quick knock down. The occupant was treated by Webster EMS Paramedics at the scene. A cat was rescued from the home, but several of the occupant's birds did not survive. No injuries were reported. |
