On Wednesday October 17th , shortly before 3 PM, Webster firefighters were notified of smoke coming from a building on Poland Street. A 1st alarm assignment was struck for a possible structure fire located at 24 Poland Street. The Webster PD arrived on scene first and confirmed a working structure fire at the location, and responding firefighters requested a 2nd alarm struck prior to their arrival. Heavy smoke hung low in the roadway, obscuring the street at times. Upon arrival, first due Engine 3 stretched an 1 ¾ handline to what appeared to be the seat of the fire in the first floor kitchen area. The attack did make good progress, but with the balloon frame construction, the fire had gained considerable headway. Mutual aid companies started to arrive on scene and began to stretch additional handlines into the dwelling. The fire had spread throughout the two story structure and into the attic. The fire was quickly brought under control as firefighters from Webster teamed up with firefighters from the Dudley, Oxford, Southbridge, and Douglas Fire Departments. The occupant of the dwelling had escaped the building before 1st responders arrived. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear suspicious according to Webster Fire Officials. |
