On Thursday September 6th at approximately 4:40 PM, Webster firefighters were alerted to a reported house fire located at 18 Day Lane. It is thought that the house was struck by lightning minutes before from a passing thunderstorm. First due Webster firefighters arrived to find a large two story wood frame multiple family dwelling with heavy smoke showing from the roof and eaves of the structure. Attack lines were stretched into the building and mutual aid was summonsed to the scene. The fire was very difficult to locate within the building due to the construction and heavy smoke. When the roof was opened up, a large volume of fire appeared to have control of the attic space. Interior operations continued until a chimney collapsed and fell onto an interior stairwell, narrowly missing several firefighters. The interior crews were withdrawn, and three aerial master streams were put into service to knock down the heavy fire in the 2nd floor and attic space. After the heavy fire was knocked down, firefighters were allowed to go back in and mop up the hot spots. During this operation, one firefighter fell through the staircase between the 1st and 2nd floor and was lodged in the stair tread at chest level. A Mayday was declared and the RIT team was activated. The trapped jake was pulled from the stair and walked out of the building under his own power. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation as a precaution. Two other firefighters were also transported to the hospital for dehydration. All three firefighters were treated and released from the hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but doesn't appear to be suspicious. |
