At approximately 8 PM on Thursday evening January 7th, while on-duty Webster firefighters were investigating smoke in a local department store, the Webster Fire Alarm Office began to become inundated with 911 calls reporting a fire in a dwelling located at 535 School Street. Webster Police responded and arrived at the location in less than a minute, reporting a confirmed working structure fire. The officer radioed that there were “flames showing from the attic window”. Webster Engine 3 was able to clear the smoke investigation and responded immediately. Enroute, a second alarm was struck by responding Webster Fire officers. Webster Fire Chief Brian Hickey arrived on scene prior to his first engine and assessed the situation. As Webster Engine 3 arrived on scene, they were tasked with putting a big line (2 ½ “) into operation, blitzing the fire emanating from the third story window. The Dudley FD arrived on scene next, and Chief Hickey assigned them to stretch a handline up the rear stairwell and see if they could access the fire in the attic. A crew from Webster assisted the Dudley crew with the stretch and the firefight was on. The fire was quickly brought under control as the blitz line in the front of the building was exchanged for an 1 ¾ “ , that was brought over a ground ladder into the attic window. The two handlines worked together to quell the fast moving flames. No injuries were reported, and crews from Dudley, Oxford, Douglas, and Thompson CT assisted Webster firefighters at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time by the Webster Fire and Police Departments. Webster firefighters monitored the scene for hotspots for several hours following the fire. The Box 4 Canteen truck from Worcester provided firefighters with much needed rehab of Gatorade, coffee and crackers. |
