At approximately 21:30 hrs. on Monday evening, December 7th, Sturbridge firefighters were alerted to a reported structure fire located at 126 River Road. Sturbridge fire dispatchers started to receive numerous calls for a fire in that area, while the on-duty crew was already in service handling and ambulance call. Sturbridge Fire Chief David Zinther immediately recognized that his first due engine would be slightly delayed, so he requested an engine and crew from the neighboring Southbridge FD and a tanker from another neighboring town, the Brimfield FD. When all was said and done, firefighters from approximately 18 towns from two states got a piece of the 4-alarm fire which engulfed a large commercial garage that housed a construction and landscaping business. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported despite multiple explosions from the site during the early stages of the firefight. Chief Zinther reported the building housed numerous tanks of flammable gases and oxidizers such as propane, acetylene, and oxygen. A lack of water hampered firefighting efforts until a tanker shuttle could be established, mostly using mutual aid tankers. A site to fill tankers was set up on Farqhar Rd., about ¾ of a mile from the fire scene. The hydrant district does not extend down River Rd. The cause of the fire has not been determined at the present time, and the State Fire Marshals Office is assisting the Sturbridge FD in their investigation. The structure and all of its contents were deemed a total loss. |
