On July 17th numerous heavy thunderstorms packed with plenty of lightning and thunder rattled many of the communities in Southern Worcester County. One bolt is suspected to have hit a Southbridge occupied multiple dwelling starting a smouldering fire that would soon escalate into a 3 alarm inferno. At approximately 7 PM, Southbridge Fire Alarm fielded an emergency call stating there was heavy smoke in the area of Dresser and Marcy Streets. Upon arrival, first due firefighters found a two and a half story occupied wood frame dwelling with heavy smoke pushing from the eaves and fire showing at the rear of the building. Southbridge firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack. Mutual aid was quickly summonsed and was tasked with ventilation and stretching additional back up lines. The bulk of the fire was found in the attic space and the top floor of the dwelling. Very hot and humid weather conditions nescessitated frequent crew rotations. No injuries were reported. |
