On Sunday afternoon, May 29th, at approximately 4:30 PM, Putnam firefighters were alerted to a possible structure fire burning on 283 Woodstock Avenue, on the corner of Hurlbut Street. Firefighters responding to the station could see the black smoke in the sky, and they knew they’d be going to work on arrival. Upon arrival, the first fire officer reported heavy fire at the rear of the building. As the officer did his 360, he noticed that at least two, and possibly three vehicles were involved in the fire, as well as the entire “C” side of the building including two stories of wooden porches. The radiant heat produced by the inferno melted vinyl siding on a dwelling next door. Mutual aid was quickly called by Putnam Fire Chief Bob Campbell to aid his firefighters in bringing the fire quickly under control. Firefighters from East Putnam, Woodstock, and Attawaugen rushed to the scene to assist their Putnam brothers. In all, two families were displaced, but no deaths or injuries were reported. Those displaced were being assisted by the American Red Cross. Several dogs were rescued by firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation and remains undetermined at the present time. |
