At approximately 01:50 hours on Tuesday January 5th, Putnam (CT) firefighters responded to a reported house fire located at 133 Park Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found one of the building’s occupants outside the structure and severely burned, as well as heavy fire rolling from the two-story wood frame multiple family dwelling. Putnam firefighters made several attempts to initiate an aggressive interior attack, but each time they were thwarted by the stubborn, fast moving fire. Also hampering firefighting efforts was the building’s interior layout. The dwelling, which was built in 1881, had been divided up into four apartments and had many walls and dividers. As the fire gained control the building, Putnam Fire Chief Bob Campbell made the decision to withdraw firefighters and initiate a defensive fire attack. Firefighters settled in for a lengthy battle with the fire and the ice, as the mercury dipped into the single digits throughout most of the incident. Mutual aid from the surrounding towns of East Putnam, Attawaugan, and the Community Fire Company responded to the fire to assist Putnam jakes, while Woodstock firefighters covered the Putnam firehouse. One of the building’s occupants was found outside the dwelling on arrival with 2nd and 3rd degree burns to over 50% of his body. He was treated on scene, then transported to the Rhode Island Burn Center by ambulance. There were no other reported injuries. The cause of the early morning fire is currently under investigation by Fire Marshal Norm Perron. He stated that the fire appears to accidental in nature and “a smoking apparatus” may have been involved. |
