Just before 9 PM on Thursday December 14th, Oxford firefighters received a call for a residential structure fire located at 16 Sacarrappa Road. A resident of the dwelling was returning home when she noticed the house was on fire. She immediately knew that her elderly mother was still inside the home, but due to smoke and flames she was unable to get into the structure. She ran to a neighbor's house and called the fire department. Oxford firefighters arrived at the location to find a single story ranch well involved in fire. They were aware of the potentially trapped occupant and immediately began a search of the home. Firefighters searching were met with "Colliers Mansion-type" conditions, making it difficult to perform a rapid, methodical search. Fire conditions inside the burning structure continued to deteriorate, threatening the safety of the firefighters. Those firefighters reluctantly were forced to abandon their search, quickly exiting through windows. The house was located on a very rural road and a bridge on the road was out, severely limiting approach and access to the fire scene. To further complicate matters, the dwelling was located outside of the hydrant district and water had to be shuttled to the scene by tankers over a very narrow roadway. The fill site was approximately a mile removed from the scene. The extremely cold weather also took its toll on firefighters and their equipment. One water supply engine experienced mechanical problems and could not supply water to the fireground. Precious time was lost while another engine was put in the position, and water supply re-established. The heavy fireload within the dwelling also contributed to the fast, heavy fire spread. The elderly occupant of the dwelling did indeed perish in the fire and was recovered a few hours after the initial call. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Oxford FD and the State Fire Marshals Office. |
