On Wednesday evening January 16th just before 11 PM, East Putnam firefighters were alerted to a reported building fire at Baker’s Auto located at 196 Providence Pike in their town. The well-known auto dealer has been in business for about three decades, primarily selling and repairing older Lincoln Continental town cars. Upon arrival of the first due East Putnam units, it was determined that there was indeed a well advanced fire within the structure, and heavy smoke was pushing from the wood frame, multiple story building. There was also a heavy load of flammable liquids such as paint, lacquer, and oil throughout the business. As firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack, it was found that the fire had gained considerable headway, and a lot of help would be needed to bring the fire under control. The Incident Commander quickly struck additional alarms to bring enough resources to the scene to deal with the massive blaze. Incident Command eventually struck three alarms. In all, 12 additional departments responded to a call for mutual aid, responding directly to the fire. East Putnam, Putnam, Attawaguan, Dayville, Quinebaug, East Killingly, Woodstock, Thompson Hill, Williamsville, Community, West Gloucester RI, and Webster, Massachusetts all responded to the scene with a variety of equipment. Water supply hampered firefighters until hydrants nearly one mile away from the fire scene could be tapped with large diameter hose. Before those lines were established, firefighters relied on water they were drafting out of a small pond across the street from the structure, as well as the water incoming fire apparatus had on board. A major east-west route, Rt. 44, had to be shut down for several hours and traffic detoured so that large diameter supply lines could be protected. One firefighter suffered a non-life threatening injury. No other injuries were reported. The cause for the late night fire is currently under investigation and the cause remains undetermined. |
