On Saturday morning March 30th, at around 4 AM, Killingly firefighters were alerted to a possible structure fire in the vacant ACME Cotton and Textile Mill located at 963 Bailey Hill Road in East Killingly. When first due units arrived they found the mill complex well involved. The fire was fought defensively from the start, as aerial device responded with a barrage of master streams. The was a good size pond, the ACME Pond, across the street which was depended on heavily during firefighting operations. Approximately eight department and 60 firefighters responded to the scene during the height of the fire, as were representatives of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state police. The fire did not spread beyond the mill complex, and no injuries were reported. Air quality testing was done and it was determined there were no contaminants in the smoke. However, Officials said the presence of asbestos was found in the solid pieces of debris from the fire. Remnants were carried on convection currents and ended up in neighbor's yards. The State's DOE and EPA are formulating a plan to mitigate this hazard by picking up the debris. |
