At approximately 00:22 hrs. on Friday December 6th, members of the Dudley FD were alerted to a reported fire in a private dwelling located at 19 Charlton Road. When first due Dudley firefighters arrived on scene, they were greeted with a heavy fire condition emanating from a one story ranch. Live electrical wires were down in the front yard which altered the fire attack tactics. A call to National Grid was immediately placed, and a lineman arrived less than 30 minutes later. He was able to disconnect the downed wires at the pole, negating the live wire hazard. Due to the energized powerlines being draped across the roadway, apparatus had to enter the street from two different directions to attack the well advanced fire, as well as to enter the structure to conduct primary and secondary searches. Adjustments were made and Dudley jakes mounted an aggressive interior attack to knock down the bulk of the fire and support the searches in progress. Firefighters were also hampered by the recent snowfall, and line placement was not an easy task. Mutual aid was summonsed, and firefighters from Webster, Oxford, Southbridge, and Charlton responded and assisted Dudley jakes on the scene. One occupant apparently self extricated himself from the building prior to the DFD arrival and was uninjured. He was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and subsequently transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. No other injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by members of the Dudley FD and the State Fire Marshals Office. |
