Just before 7 AM on Sunday April 24th, Dudley firefighters responded to "a possible explosion and fire" at 28 Raymond Street. Numerous calls were being received at Fire Alarm. Dudley police officers arrived on scene and reported that there was a camping trailer on fire at the rear of the residence, and the fire was extending into the two story split-level ranch dwelling. It was reported that there were still occupants in the trailer and the dwelling. To complicate matters, when firefighters arrived they heard and saw several 40 lb. propane cylinders venting from their relief valves in the area of the camping trailer at the rear of the structure. Three alarms were struck in quick succession to bring adequate resources, including manpower, to the scene. Dudley firefighters did a great job of being able to get two handlines into operation quickly, one covering the venting propane tanks and one entering the structure for fire attack. Unfortunately, the camping trailer had burned almost completely and collapsed prior to the fire department's arrival. One occupant who was "house bound" and apparently lived in the trailer, perished in the fire. No other occupants were found in the dwelling, and no injuries to any civilians or firefighters were reported. Dudley firefighters were assisted on scene by members of the Webster, Southbridge, Auburn, and Quinebaug fire departments. The fire was investigated by the Dudley FD, the State Fire Marshals Office, and CPAC unit of the Massachusetts State Police. |
