Shortly after 7 AM on Friday January 6th, all Dudley FD cars and companies were alerted to a fire in a residential barn located at 10 Intervale Road in West Dudley. The large three stall wood & metal structure measured approximately 40' x 60' and was one and a half stories. I was returning from my part time job, and I was about three minutes away from the location. I was the first to arrive, and reported "smoke showin' from the entire ridge vent". First due Dudley Engine 1 arrived on scene, stretched a line and made entry to a workshop door on the "A/D" corner of the building. A mechanical failure with E-1's pump prevented the handline from being charged. Dudley E-2 arrived on scene a few minutes later, but the fire had gained considerable headway. The location is also well outside the hydrant district, so a water source had to be established. Luckily, there was a pond across the street and the Quinebaug(CT)VFD set in to draft and supplied the fireground. Mutual aid was also requested from the Community Fire Company and the Southbridge FD. |
