On Wednesday morning March 27th just before 3 AM, Douglas firefighters responded to a reported fire in a very large 3-story apartment building located at 40 Depot Street. First due firefighters arrived to find a moderate fire condition on the first floor apartment with the fire rapidly extending to the upper floors. A second alarm was struck, as crews on scene began stretching multiple attack lines into the structure. The apartment building housed 7 apartments in all. Fire Officers were initially told all occupant of the dwelling had egressed prior to the arrival of the fire department. As additional firefighters and mutual aid arrived on scene, crews performed primary search of all floors to confirm the report. All occupants had indeed escaped on their own due to working smoke detectors and a well maintained fire alarm system. As the fire extended and took hold in the second and third floors, a third alarm was struck to bring additional resources to the scene. In all, fourteen departments from two states and a Field Communications Unit from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services responded to the scene to assist The Douglas FD with the fire. Firefighters were making good progress when a rapid change in the smoke conditions prompted Command to withdraw all firefighters from the building and take a head count. All firefighters were accounted for. Several large diameter hose lines and master streams were opened up as the attack went defensive, while an additional vertical vent cut in the main structure was ordered to try to cut off the advancement of the fire. Fire conditions improved and after a few minutes, the big lines and master streams were shut down and companies were allowed back into the building to knock down the remaining fire. The fire was under control by approximately 6 AM, but extensive overhaul operations would last throughout the morning. Fifteen to twenty residents were displaced by the early morning fire and all were being assisted by The Red Cross. No injuries to any civilian or firefighter were reported. Those fire departments from Massachusetts sending apparatus and companies to the scene were Dudley, Sutton, Uxbridge, Mendon, Millville, Northbridge, Oxford, Hopedale, Upton, Auburn, and Leicester. Mutual aid that responded from Rhode Island included the Harrisville, Pascoag, and Mapleville Fire Departments. Ancillary units responding were Webster EMS, the Grafton FD Canteen, as well as the Providence Canteen to look after the rehabilitation of cold and exhausted firefighters. |
