At approximately 11:30 PM on Monday May 16th, Danielson firefighters responded to a reported fire in a two-story apartment house located at 11 Maple Street, located just off of Route 6. As the first fire officer arrived on scene, he reported observing heavy fire from two windows on the second floor, and requested that the balance of the assignment be filled out. Danielson Fire Chief Gerry Marcheterre stated, “We knocked that down, but the fire had already by-passed us and gotten into the walls. With the residence's balloon construction, the fire got up into the ceiling and roof in no time. We pulled out and used an aerial ladder to continue fighting the fire." Danielson firefighters, who received assistance from eight other fire departments, tried to get ahead of the fire, aggressively pushing handlines in toward the seat of the fire and pulling ceilings and walls ahead of those lines to expose the fast moving fire. But in the end, the building’s 116 year old construction did in the best efforts of the firefighters, allowing the fire to spread quickly into the attic and roof sections of the apartment house. Two elevated aerial master streams were brought to bear on the large volume of fire, and it was quickly brought under control. Firefighters were then allowed to enter the building once again to conduct extensive overhaul operations. No injuries were reported, but eleven people were displaced by the late night fire. The occupants were being assisted by the American Red Cross. The building was deemed a total loss. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Killingly Fire Marshal Randy Burchard and the Connecticut State Fire Marshals Office. Fire Departments providing assistance at the scene included the Dayville, Attawaugan, East Brooklyn, East Killingly, Moosup, South Killingly and Williamsville fire departments, as well as the Atwood Hose Fire Company. KB Ambulance responded to and stood by at the fire scene. |
