On July 26th, Charlton firefighters were called to an old wooden mill structure less than a quarter of a mile from their headquarters. Dispatch had received numerous calls reporting the fire. On arrival, the first due firefighters encountered heavy smoke showing from a large structure. They attempted an aggressive interior attack, but conditions quickly deteriorated and the fire showed itself. Water supply became an issue, as Charlton firefighters quickly changed tactics and went to defensive operations to protect several nearby structures from the intense radiant heat. In the end, Fire District 7 tanker task forces were activated and sent to Charlton to help establish a water supply. Two aerialscopes and one tower ladders were pressed into operation. Firefighters had a very difficult time gaining access to the full length of the fire building. The fire destroyed the original fire building which housed a high end car restoration business, but jakes were able to keep the fire out of two nearby mixed occupancy buildings that were severly threatened at the height of the fire. A damage estimate has not been released, but it is expected to run over a million dollars. The cause of the fire is not suspicious. |
