On Friday evening March 15th just before 8 PM, The Auburn Fire Rescue Department responded to a reported building fire at The Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post 279 located at 88 Bancroft Street. The building was in full swing, as about 120 people were taking part in the traditional Lenten Friday-night fish fry. There was also karaoke and dancing. Alarms started sounding inside the building as a fire broke out near one of the fryolators. Post members as well as an off duty member of the Auburn FD assisted in the quick and orderly evacuation of the building. The fire quickly spread up the walls and involved the attic of the structure very quickly. AFD fire officials stated the roof collapsed 15 minutes after their arrival. The fire rapidly escalated to three alarms, requiring a mutual aid response from Worcester, Millbury, Leicester, Webster, Oxford, Southbridge and Charlton. No injuries were reported, and investigators from the State Fire Marshals Office and District 7 are working together to come up with a cause for the early evening fire. |
