The old man was the chief harpooner in the village. He's standing on the bow of a boat with sails made of woven reeds, searching for a whale (that didn't appear that day). Scanned from a dusty old slide:)

the light is amazing - the contrast between the brilliant blue and the gloss of his dark skin - I can imagine the focus on his face without even seeing it
