5. Once you’ve done that, you’ll see a new thumbnail appear on the layer window, corresponding to the mask. It should be all black, and there should be a thin white frame around it indicating that everything you do with any tools or adjustments will be performed on the layer mask, not the image portion of the layer. You’ll also see the image go back to full color.
