1. Make sure the “layer” window is visible. You may need to go to the “Window” menu, and turn it on. Duplicate the background layer by right-clicking on “Background” and selecting “Duplicate Layer”. If you want, you can name the duplicated layer something relevant, like “Desaturated Layer”.
