Rubbertown

-Rubbertown is an area named for a synthetic rubber plant built to supply munitions for World War II, and the surrounding communities. Rubbertown is located in Jefferson County, Kentucky, beyond the city limits of Louisville. Rubbertown borders approximately six miles of the Ohio River. African-Americans comprise approximately 60% of the population in Rubbertown.

-Various chemical and manufacturing industries have been located or are currently located in the Rubbertown area. Prior to the 1970s, improper waste disposal practices that impacted the air and surface water were common. Organized citizen groups are concerned that historical industrial practices have resulted in contamination of the land and groundwater. Although air quality in Rubbertown has improved since the enactment of the Clean Air Act, it remains a concern of the community. An air toxics study is being planned to address this concern. A key finding of a report funded by the Jefferson County Health Department and entitled Cancer Mortality and Morbidity in Jefferson County is that the Rubbertown area has the second highest cancer mortality rate in Jefferson County.
