Nesses últimos anos, tenho resgatado alguns trabalhos fotográficos feitos no passado. Em 1976 fui convidado por um grupo de conhecidos para visitar e fotografar a Vila Restinga que fica situada a aproximadamente 20 km ao sul do centro de Porto Alegre. Na época era uma pequena aglomeração onde viviam pessoas de renda muito baixa. As ruas não eram pavimentadas e, em suma, era um local muito pobre. No que diz respeito à fotografia e quanto ao aspecto documental, foi bem interessante. Fizemos fotos nas ruas e fomos recebidos na casa de um morador com sua esposa e seu filho. Não me recordo do seu nome, mas talvez fosse "Seu Zimbo", que também era um bom músico. Não me recordava, também, das pessoas que foram junto. Mas minha amiga Clarice Knijnik me informou que se tratava de um grupo de seus colegas da faculdade de Arquitetura da UFRGS, e, com sua ajuda, foi possível identificar alguns participantes. Na época, fomos bem recebidos na comunidade. Hoje a Vila Restinga se tornou um distrito com 60 mil habitantes. As ruas são pavimentadas, há um centro de saúde e escolas públicas. Continua sendo, lamentavelmente, um local pobre e com vários problemas, incluindo tráfico de drogas. Teria eu coragem e disposição para, hoje (2022) ir lá fazer um registro fotográfico? Certamente não. Na época eu usei uma câmera Nikkormat FT2 com as lentes Nikkor 50/1.4, 135/2.8 e uma grande-angular Makinon 28/2.8. Os filmes PB utilizados foram Kodak Tri-X e Plus-X. E também me perguntei: se fizesse essas fotos hoje, seriam elas diferentes? Acredito que, exceto algumas pequenas mudanças de fotometria e enquadramento, seriam praticamente idênticas. Os negativos foram macro-fotografados com uma Olympus E-M1 Mark II e a lente Zuiko 30/3.5. O tratamento numérico foi feito no software ACDSee.

Lately, I have been revisiting my old pictures. In 1976 I was invited by some friends to visit and photograph the Vila Restinga, a neighborhood 20 km south of Porto Alegre downtown. It was, at that time, a relatively small district with quite poor people living there. The streets were not paved, for instance. It was an interesting photographic and documentary work. I took pictures on the streets and we were invited by Mr. Zimbo ("Seu Zimbo"; I am not sure about his name) to visit his house. He was a fine musician. I had very weak memories of the group. Fortunately, with the help of my friend Clarice Knijnik, we could spot some names; actually, most of them were students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Univ. Federal de Rio Grande do Sul, Clarice's colleagues. We were well accepted in that community for this reportage. Nowadays (2022), Vila Restinga is a large district with about 60 thousand inhabitants, with a public health center and schools. Unfortunately, it is still a poor area with drug traffic problems, among others. Would I go there for taking pictures now? Certainly not; too risky. In 1976 I had a Nikkormat FT2 camera with the Nikkor lenses 50/1.4 and 135/2.8 as well as a wide-angle Makinon 28/2.8. I used BW Kodak Tri-X and Plus-X films. I also asked myself: if I would take these pictures today, would be they different? I believe that, except small changes on framing and light measurement, they would be virtually identical. The negatives were macro-photographed with an Olympus E-M1 II camera and the Zuiko 35/3.5 macro lens. Then, they were edited with ACDSee.
