France South-West: Bordeaux, Saint-Émillion and Sarlat-le-Canéda (2023)

During our November trip (2023), we stayed most of the time in Paris, but for 3 days we went, by TGV train, to Bordeaux with the intention of visiting the Dordogne area. We arrived at Gare Saint-Jean at the end of a rainy afternoon. We walked in the historical town the same day. Next day, we drove to Sarlat-la-Canéda (also known as Sarlat) and we passed by Saint-Émilion, very famous for its wine. Good surprise, this small medieval town (with about 2000 inhabitants) has houses and edifications from the 12th century. It is a "crossroad" between Bordeaux and the Périgord. The town is surrounded by vineyards and it has been considered as an Unesco World Heritage since 1999. After some hours in Saint-Émilion, we went back to the road to Sarlat. It is another relatively small medieval town (with about 9000 inhabitants) at the heart of the Dordogne (Périgord Noir). The historical town possesses typical buildings from the 13th Century. One of the main attractions is the church-abbey Saint Sacerdos. We stayed in Sarlat for two nights and this charming town was our central point to several promenades in the region. Sarlat and Saint are highly recommended places to be visited.
