Sambaqui: visiting some Azorean Traditions in Florianópolis (2023)

English:
Florianópolis is the city located on the Island of Santa Catarina. The town occupies the entire island; it has Azorean (portuguese) ascendance. Its culture has strong influence coming from Azorean people. Among several legends and aspects, there is the tradition of "rendeiras" (lacemakers), still alive after approximately 300 years (from the immigration). We visited Sambaqui, one of the oldest and most traditional neighborhoods of Florianópolis. Particularly, at the final part of Sambaqui, there is the "Ponta do Sambaqui" where the "rendeiras" house is located. They use a particular type of laces using "tools" called "bilros" . There are many legends related to this Azorean culture as the "bernunça", the "boitatá" and the "boi-de-mamão". In that place there is oyster farming which is an important activity, also extended to the other parts of the island. We (Norton, Leão and myself) went there to take some pictures and we were well accepted by the "rendeiras" who are, indeed, very nice. It is summertime now; then, at sunset, we had a cold beer and some fish appetizers at the restaurant "Delícias do Mar" in Sambaqui.
