Two historical cities in Paraná (2024)

English:
There are two historical cities near Curitiba, capital of Paraná state. In a single day I visited Morretes and Antonina. This area was occupied by the Carijos indians, as in the whole south littoral of Brazil. To reach Morretes, the best way is to take the Graciosa road, which crosses the mountains of the Serra do Mar. It is the oldest way to connect the littoral to Curitiba. In the 7th, 8th and 19th centuries, this road was the path to transport goods and merchandise between Curitiba and the coast. In Morretes, there was a prosperous industry of "matte" produced with the help of water mills. The mountain Marumbi is an attraction of this city which is crossed by the Nhundiaquara river. In the late 1800 years, a train liaison between Curitiba and Morretes was implemented and the city became decadent. Because it was a relatively rich town, many art-deco houses and buildings were well preserved and Morretes is now a touristic place. The typical dish is the stew called "barreado". Also a known attraction is the railway connecting Curitiba to Morretes since in about 70 km there is the mountain climbing of Serra do Mar. It is one of the most beautiful railways of Brazil.
The second visited city is Antonina, located 12 km far from Morretes. It is an old harbor with still some little activity. When the much larger Paranaguá harbor (close to the ocean) was implemented, Antonina suffered in terms of economy and became decadent. Contrarily to Morretes, the majority of the beautiful houses were not renewed. It would be necessary a large financial support to help the town to become a tourist attraction. Hopefully it will be done soon. Anyway, Antonina is still a nice place to be visited and keeps the typical harbor charm.
