Numa recente viagem, visitamos Colônia-Alemanha, uma cidade que há muito tempo conheço; sempre gostei da sua atmosfera alegre e animada. Foi um polo na fotografia na Alemanha, pois a famosa feira Photokina (onde estive em duas ocasiões) era realizada lá. Por coincidência e sorte, estávamos no dia 11 do mês 11 às 11 horas e 11 minutos, quando inicia o bem conhecido carnaval de Colônia (é o "grito de carnaval"). Já tinha ouvido falar desse evento, mas, erroneamente, imaginei que haveria "meia-dúzia" de pessoas fantasiadas. Bem ao contrário, a cidade é tomada por uma quantidade imensa de pessoas que vêm de inúmeras cidades da Alemanha e países próximos. Muita música, fantasias e bebida. É uma grande "bagunça" mas, tanto quanto pude observar, sem violências e quebradeiras. Uma bela confraternização. No dia seguinte, o calmo já estava restabelecido e a limpeza sendo feita. Arnulf Kost, grande amigo e fotógrafo, veio de Berlim para passar dois dias conosco. Carnaval de Colônia: uma curiosa experiência; se não estivéssemos lá neste 11 de 11, jamais teríamos uma ideia do que isso significa.

On a recent trip, we visited Cologne (Koln), Germany. I have known this town since the late 1970s; I always liked Koln because it has an animated and vivid atmosphere. It was an important photography pole; the famous Photokina show used to be held in Cologne (I attended it twice). By tradition, on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour and 11 minutes, the carnival starts in Cologne; and, with luck, we were there at this moment. I have heard of it, but I imagined that there were only a few people at customs in town. Contrarily, the event runs on the whole city counting thousands of people, singing, dancing and drinking. It is a big feast but without fights and windows breaking for instance. On the next day, 12th November, it was over and the calmness regained the place. The street cleaning had started. Arnulf Kost, photographer and close friend, came from Berlin to spend two days with us. Cologne carnival: a curious experience and, if I hadn't been there on this 11/11, I would never have imagined what it is.
