Cruz e Souza Palace and surroundings, downtown Florianópolis (2023)

The Cruz e Souza Palace is one of the most important monuments of Florianópolis. This building, located by the 15 de Novembro platz, was built in the 18th Century and acquired its final form in the late 19th Century. It was the headquarters of the Santa Catarina state until 1984, but in 1979 it became the Cruz e Souza Palace, homage to the poet João da Cruz e Souza who was born in 1861 and was known as the "Black Swan". Cruz e Souza was the child of liberated slaves. He was an important artist, already recognized at his time. However, he had a short and sad life; his wife and three of his children died young and Cruz e Souza died from tuberculosis at age of 37. The palace is very beautiful and well preserved. It is one of cultural and touristic attractions of the town. The pictures were taken in a single day with the photographer and friend Norton Jorge José.
