Marble Sculptures

Suitably located at the base of the Marble Mountains, you will find several venues that carve and sculpt marble. Many depict Buddha or the Goddess of Mercy, but there are also designs inspired by nature. Ironically, because the original Marble Mountain was stripped of its namesake, the marble these days is mostly imported from China.
Some sculpture outlets will also fashion your own ideas or designs. Everything is possible: from flowerpots and vases to garden fountains and even bathtubs! The mainstay of the sculpture business at Marble Mountain has always been traditional carvings. Traditional Champa designs are carefully reproduced. And among the more intriguing designs is the classical Chinese pixiu, a fearsome winged, lion-like creature which legend has it, draws wealth to itself. The hope is that it will also do the same for the owner. The Cham Empire was based on Indian culture. It is now believed that the Indian tradition came to Cambodia (The Khmer Empire) and the Chams in Vietnam via the Indian-based culture of Bali. The sculpture designs you can find at Marble Mountain feature Hindu deities such as Shiva and Vishnu as well as mythical creatures such as the sea monster, makara.
