When the first 914 came out there were enthusiasts that were unhappy with the 4 cylinder VW based engine, and described the car as not a true Porsche. The installation of the 6 cylinder 911 engine quieted down these Porsche die hards, but as the car was nearly as expensive as a 911, demand for the car was low. Porsche made only 3,351 of the 914-6 vs 114,479 of the 4 cylinder 914E, and about 30,000 911 variants during the same time. This model was only made between 1970 and 1972. To put that in perspective, Porsche made 1,400 of the famed, 1973 Carrera RS which is, along with the Speedsters, the ‘Holy Grail’ or production Porshes, and will set you back $200k or so. Judged without 911 goggles on, the 914-6 is a very neat little car, and with the 911 engine, a very fast machine.

Today the 914-6 is rarer still as most had a hard life, and relatively few survive. Those that didn’t rust away were often butchered with V8 conversions and/or had a hard life on the track. This is an original factory 914-6 that was always a dry California car that was never rusted. It has virgin floor pans which is very rare for a Porsche of this vintage. It was given a colour change in the 90’s from its original orange to black paint. It is a “10 foot” paint job and should be considered driver quality, though there is no collision damage or bondo evident. Close examination of the wheel wells, floor pans and under both hoods reveals some of the original orange paint. There are spots on the car which show the body prep, and the paint does have some orange peel. There is absolutely no rust evident in the chassis or wheel wells. The targa top and rubber bumpers are faded but not damaged there has not been attempt to refinish them, though there are some detail products on the market that may restore some of the colour. The dash has some cracks that are photographed, but these should be repairable-no attempt has been made to fill them. The seat vinyl is in generally good condition but there is a seam that has come undone on the drivers seat cushion.

This car has had the engine upgraded from the original 2.0L flat 6 to a 2.4L version from a 1973 911. The car starts up instantly and settles into a slightly uneven idle. It picks up its revs quickly and races to redline; this is a very fast car. The car has some minor oil leaks and some small oil spots can be seen on the ground after a drive (it has been sitting for the winter). The transmission shifts well with good synchros. The tires are good and the car stops straight and strong. Otherwise mechanically and electrically the car is in good condition, though the new owner can expect to do some sorting of the car as it hasn’t been driven regularly for a few years.

So, you can drive the car as is, or treat it to a quality paint job and tend to some minor cosmetics knowing that you have a special car that has significant upside in the future.
