906 Twin-Plug Racing Engine (Miles Collier Collection)

Porsche Type: 901/20 - Engine Serial Number: 906105

Though it looked similar to the basic Porsche 911 power unit at first glance, the 901/20 "Carrera 6" racing engine was a wholly different proposition; its crankcase was cast magnesium rather than Aluminum, and crucial components like the forged high compression aluminum alloy pistons, titanium connecting rods, light alloy cylinders with chrome bores, sodium filled valves, smaller diameter cooling fan and twin-ignition were featured. The crankshaft was a standard production part with special preparation, while the flywheel was pared down from 13.2 to 7.7 pounds. The sum of all of these modifications was an engine that was not only 119 pounds lighter than the standard 911 unit but, at 210 horsepower, was 25 percent more powerful.
