A 904 mainshaft allows for a more precise gearing configuration of 901 and 911 Porsche racing gearboxes for just about any track. First introduced in the Porsche 904 model and subsequently used in the 906, 911 and 914-6 GT race cars, the 904 mainshaft allows the change of the 2nd gear ratio without having to replace the entire shaft. In street versions of the 901 and 911 gearboxes, the 2nd gear is machined as part of the shaft and can't be easily changed. Without question, a 904 mainshaft is an indispensable and very important competition component in any 901 or 911 transaxle.
