Many Rally cars including the Rally Porsche 914-6 GT’s use their parking brake lever often during competition in order to assist in turning the cars around very quickly in tight corners and space. One interesting thing about the parking brake levers used by these Rally cars is that they were modified to behave completely in reverse. In other words, in the rally cars, the 'detent-pawl' is never allowed to engage the teeth in the ratchet unless the driver presses the button of the parking brake lever allowing the pawl to engage. The pawl is always spring-loaded away from the ratchet at ALL times. In a normal parking brake lever application here in the U.S., the pawl is designed to ALWAYS be spring loaded in contact with the ratchet and the very reason why you hear the clicking noise as one moves the lever up. Imagine what would happen if a Rally driver’s finger slipped off the button of the parking lever and the parking brake engaged the ratchet locking it in place. That would be catastrophic!
