NP "The Valve Job"

(03/30/2017) Hi Armando

Today’s work consisted of decarbonizing all the ATE valves by media basting them https://pbase.com/image/165216197. Next I reground the 45’ angle on the face of the valve https://pbase.com/image/165216198 and then dressed the valve stem tip https://pbase.com/image/165216203. Then measuring and polishing the valve stem https://pbase.com/image/165216209. At this point we had a significant mortality rate. Next step is to check the valve run-out on a special jig https://pbase.com/image/165216193, this shows the run-out down to .0001” of an inch, we lost a few more. As per our phone conversation I was able to compile one set of valves in pretty good condition, and put tighter a 2nd set that’s O.K. Next step was to lap the laves into the valve seat in the cylinder head. This leaves a pattern on the valve and the seat confirming good contact all the way around. Last step is to set the valve spring heights and assemble the heads. The attached photos are all labeled and in order of work performed. Feel free to modify them as you wish.

Thx,

Bernd

(04/07/2017) Good Morning Armando-

Well, guess it’s time to bring you up to date on the 906 engine work. Next step on the Cylinder Heads was to select the Valve Springs. I test these on a conventional Valve spring tester at three stages 40mm https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/165252874, 30mm https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/165252872 & 25mm https://pbase.com/image/165252876. please disregard the red pointer it is a tattletale that I rarely use, the black pointer is the one to look at. After checking the springs we are ready to set the spring height, this is done by adding or subtracting shims under the Valve Spring Base and measuring with the factory tool https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/165252854. Next a Teflon Valve Guide seal is installed https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/165252861, a thin coat of M0S2 on the Valve stem and assemble. Good to go https://pbase.com/image/165252859, well almost. We decided to send the valve springs out to H.M. Elliott for coating, they should be back in about 2 weeks. https://pbase.com/image/165252856

Thx, Bernie

(very cool 'Mr B'. Thank you! Armando)
