Caleb's Birth and NICU Stay

Caleb William Crawford was born on August 26, 2006. By our best guess he was born at the end of his 27th week. That means he was approximately 12 weeks early. He was 2 lbs. 15.6 oz. and 15 inches long at birth. He spent 64 days in the Arlington Memorial Hospital NICU. Please see his other galleries for updates on his progress.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the men and women at the hospital who worked so hard to bring our son into this world and give a very scared mother and father such wonderful comfort. You are God's messengers of love and we are forever grateful. Thanks to the NICU staff who watched over him every day as if he was their own child.

Thanks also to our wonderful family and friends. We am awestruck by your continued support. I can't say thanks enough for surrounding us with your love and friendship.

Thanks most of all to our Lord and Savior who brought this beautiful child of promise into this world and watches over His child, Caleb, every second of the day. We are thankful and blessed that you call us your children and reveal to us your loving-kindness and mercy daily. Jer. 29:11

Progress Report - November 17: I have moved Caleb's photos since he came home to a separate gallery. Go back to Caleb William Crawford and you'll see the new gallery. This one was just getting too big. Speaking of too big, little Caleb is up to 7 lbs. 11 oz. as of Tuesday, which was also his due date. He is doing well with his eating but still has reflux issues. Progress Report - November 10: Caleb went to the doctor yesterday and was weighed in at 7 lbs. 5 oz. He is getting so big! He is 3 days away from his adjusted due date (adjusted when he was born by the doctor) of November 13. He still struggles with reflux but he's gaining weight, praise God. He's doing great and we're so glad he's home.

Progress Report – November 7th Caleb is doing well at home. He is very hard to feed and is still fighting painful reflux but doing well. His mom and dad are tired but happy to be home together as a family. The days fly by and little Caleb is growing like a weed. At his last check up on the 2nd he was 6lbs 13.5 ounces but I’m sure he is at least 7lbs by now. The Doctor has begun giving him vaccinations at a rate of two a week to make sure they don’t overwhelm his little system. The check up with the surgeon last week went well and it looks likes we won’t have to make another visit to the surgeon’s office…good news because it is in Dallas. Caleb is showing stage 2 ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurely) which takes us to the eye Doctor weekly but thankfully the Doctor says at least right now it is nothing to be overly concerned about. Progress Report - October 28th: WE ARE HOME!!!! Yes, that is right Caleb is now at home with Mommy and Daddy. We came home today around 1:00pm at a weight of 6lb 3.6oz. Thank you Lord for protecting our son and bringing him home to us. We just can't believe we finally have him home. He is eating much better now but it is still a lot of work to get the whole 2oz in him at each feeding. The Dr. sent him home on a heart and breathing monitor so we will know he is safe at all times and we purchased a handheld portable video baby monitor so we can see him from any room in the house. I know I will sleep better knowing those safety precautions are in place. Thanks you all again for all of the prayers and for being there for us we are so blessed. Becky, Charles, and Caleb

Progress Report - October 26th: Well much to our chagrine Caleb won't be coming home as quickly as we thought. On the 24th we roomed in at the hospital to learn all the specialized care and equipment Caleb will need at home. We expected to be leaving the next day. The next day came and Caleb just wasn't eating like he was supposed to. They had us stay one more night with no change. The Dr. decided that Caleb should return to the NICU for 72 hours watch to see if his eating improves. It was quite a letdown and very difficult for both of us to go home again without our son. We do believe, however, that it was the best thing for Caleb. We also believe that God is 100% in control and that He will see us and Caleb through this. Please continue to pray for Caleb specifically that he eats his whole 2 ounces at each feeding. Also pray for us to have patience and truly experience God's peace, mercy, and love. We really need it. Progress Report - October 22nd: Caleb is doing great post surgery. He's like a new kid. He has had no reflux and is breathing on his own with absolutely no assistance! He is God's little miracle child and a wonder to behold. He started taking a bottle on Saturday with every meal for ten minutes. That night, he finished all 2 ounces by himself with none in his feed tube! Sunday was a little slower, but he got his first introduction to breast feeding. Doctors and nurses agree that if he continues on this path, he will be home this week! Woo Hoo! Please pray for Caleb to continue on his path toward home. Charles and Becky.

Progress Report - October 17th: Caleb's surgery went great today, praise God! We had to wait all day because the surgery was postponed. Caleb was already intubated at 8:30 a.m. and had to wait until 2:00 p.m. for surgery, poor kid. He is recovering well. The doctor said it would take a day or two for the valve to open up like it should. He is on an adjusted diet until then. He only has a one inch scar on his belly. Thank you for all your prayers. Please pray he recovers quickly and that the surgery fixes his reflux problem. Thanks. Charles and Becky.

Progress Report - October 16th: Caleb was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis today. That means the valve from his stomach to his small intestine is too thick and not opening enough. This is what has caused his reflux. It comes on quickly which is why we had the sudden change and usually "attacks" at about six weeks of age. The positive diagnosis means Caleb is scheduled for surgery at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, the 17th. We are happy he has been diagnosed and that there is a "fix." God is so good. The reflux surgery was much more invasive and had more chances of complications. I never thought I would be happy my kiddo would be having surgery but it will keep him from suffering so we're all for it. The recovery time is a day or so. We pray that means we can progress to feeding and go home! It looks good. He is rooting and sucking like crazy on his hands, thumbs, and pacifier. Please say a prayer for our little boy tomorrow and the hands of the surgeons operating on him. We thank God for a great outlook for our boy and for the diagnoses to be the lesser or the two surgeries. Charles and Becky

Dear Charles and Becky, I just got on line today to check on Caleb only to discover about his reflux and possible surgery. I know he will do fine - he has gained weight so quickly and is such a little "fighter". More importantly, he has been lifted up in prayer by so many. He is so adorable! From just looking at the pictures, he sure reminds me of Charles as an infant (watch out Becky, you may have your hands full). Well Caleb, we have looked at these pictures of you since you were born but are just now posting a comment. What a handsome young man you are. We continue to pray for your continued growth and increasing health. You have 2 wonderful parents that love you dearly, and a large group of friends that can't wait to play w/ you as you get bigger. We love you and are proud of your parents for their faith in God and the strength they have shown over these few weeks. As your family and others have already shared... As I lift up not only Caleb in prayer, but also his mommy and daddy, I am reminded of the scripture in IICor. 4:6-9 that says, "For God who said,'Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts, in order to manifest and reveal the face of Jesus Christ.' However, we possess this treasure in earthen vessels, that the power may be shown to be in God and not in ourselves. We are hedged in on every side, but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair; we are pursued but not deserted; and we are struck down, but never destroyed. It has felt like a week where satan has gotten a victory, and perhaps we (especially the little family of Charles, Becky, and Caleb) have at times have said to God, "why?" However, our God is perhaps in His finest hour when He shows out for His own. He has not left us, but He has assured us in verse 14 of this same chapter that "Assured that He Who raised up the Lord Jesus will raise us up also with Jesus and bring us along with you into His presence." Our God has not left us, but He continues to strategically place His angels (that nurse) to do what we can not do. I close with the 17th verse of IICor.4 that says, "For our light, momentary affliction is producing for us an everlasting weight of glory, beyond all measure." To our God be all the praise for His steadying and healing Hand over Caleb, as well as an Abiding presence over Charles and Becky and their families. Love in our Lord Jesus Name, Mom and Grandma

October 12th- A lot has happened this week. Caleb started refluxing with every feeding to the point he couldn't breathe. This went on for three days with little explanation to his frantic parents. On Wednesday, one nurse, got the ball rolling to find out what was going on and do it ASAP. We thank God she became the advocate that Caleb needed. She was a one woman show and pretty much made radiologists and lab techs get with the program and give Caleb the tests he needed to find the solution right then! They now believe Caleb has pyloric stenosis which is the thickening of the valve that lets food out of his stomach and into his intestines. The surgeon that was consulted wants to wait until Saturday for a second series of X-rays to confirm the diagnoses. If so, Caleb will have a surgery to correct the problem. Fortunately, this surgery is minor and he will recover quickly. He could still have reflux but the neonatologist really feels that this is what he has. He could also have both. Please lift him up in prayer this week and for some kind of conclusion. Until then, they have changed Caleb to a food pump that slowly give him food all day long in small amounts. This has really helped. He hasn't refluxed hardly at all since they switched to this method. God is so good and we know He is still in control. That has really been what held us together this week. Little Caleb now weighs 5 lbs. 4.6 oz! He is growing like a weed. He eats about an ounce and a half a feeding now. He is becoming a chunky little monkey! He is still struggling with his breathing, particularly after he eats and begins to reflux. Please pray that he grows out of this soon. They may try a bottle this week which is exciting, but with his breathing still being too fast, they don't know how it will go. It has been six weeks since he was born and mommy and daddy are beginning to feel the effects of our son's long term stay. Please pray for our strength and a positive attitude. We really need your prayers in this category. But mostly pray for Caleb. If he comes home soon, our problems are solved! Thanks to God for His blessings and protections showered down on Caleb! Little Caleb is now 4lbs 7.8oz wow is he growing fast. One of his doctors told me he could be the model for preemie weight gain. I just wish he was as good at breathing as he is at gaining weight but we all have to remember that Caleb isn’t even supposed to be here yet so any breathing he does is amazing. The good news is that today is Caleb’s first day on full time nasal cannula. If he does well that means no more CPAP which would be great!! Right now we are enjoying bath nights, dressing our boy, and bonding time. I can’t wait until he can be fed with a bottle and then learn to nurse. The more he learns the sooner he can come home. Progress Report September 24, 2006: Caleb has made huge gains since the last report. He now weighs 3 lbs. 13 oz. He actually has probably exceeded that today but that is his weight on Saturday. He graduated to an open crib today. We are so thrilled! The nurse called us and had us bring some clothes to help him stay warm while he adjusts to room temperature. That was a lot of fun! He is also doing six hours on nasal cannula and six hours on CPAP. Nasal cannula allows him to do everything (breathing wise) himself with a little extra oxygen. It also gets that ugly thing off his nose for six hours! He seems real happy about that. So far he has tolerated the cannula great. No heart rate dips that he hasn't recovered from on his own. Keep praying for lung development though. Bottle feeding is rapidly approaching followed by breast feeding so please pray for him to accept it and not to choke (which many preemies do). Thanks for all you prayers. They are working! God has done amazing things with our little warrior. Charles

My dearest little grandson, you are in my heart and prayers everyday. I am constantly reminded of Psalm 139: "For you did form my inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother's womb. I will confess and praise You for You are fearful and wonderful and for the wonder of my birth! Wonderful are Your works, and that my inner self knows right well." Progress Report September 14, 2006: Last night Caleb had his first real tub bath and I got to help!! Daddy was there taking pictures. I am really starting to feel more like a mommy now that we are getting to hold him more often. Caleb is still not ready to come off of his CPAP machine and breath on his own but he is doing better and all of the x-rays of his lungs look good. He is down to just two breathing treatments each day and during his bath he does well breathing on his own. He is now eating about an ounce of milk at each feeding and tolerating it very well this time. They are adding more calories to the milk to help him gain weight and it seems to be working last night he weighted 3lb 2.2oz!! Thanks again to all of you for your support and prayers. Progress Report September 11, 2006: This weekend Caleb had his first set back. On Friday a test of his stool showed some microscopic traces of blood. The doctor decided to withhold food for a few days and treat him with some antibiotics just to be cautious. By Sunday afternoon, the traces of blood were still showing in the test but had decreased. Caleb’s white blood count had also been elevated over the weekend but was back down after the antibiotics. On Sunday afternoon, because his test results had improved he was able to have a little milk again. Knowing he was not being fed was very hard for me as no mommy wants their little one to go hungry. We are pleased that he is able to have milk again and we ask for prayers that he tolerate his feeds. He also has developed a little infection in his eye. He started eye drops this morning to clear that infection. On a lighter note Caleb is the only Boy in his Pod (room) with three little girl babies and the nurses call him the playboy isn’t that cute? Thank you all for thoughts and prayers. Please pray specifically that Caleb stays healthy, continues to tolerate his feedings, and that his lungs grow and mature. Thanks Becky

Progress Report: September 5th...11 days old…Caleb is back on CPAP today he did well while he was off but due to his age and size he tires quickly. It was a nice break for him from CPAP which he doesn't seem to like but now he can rest easier. The doctors say he may go on and off CPAP for a while before he is off for good. We are told this is not a set back just a resting period. We have now both had a turn to hold him. It is amazing how special it is the first time you hold your child. We both are completely in love with our son. He has worked his way up to his maximum feeding schedule which is 12cc an hours for three hours and then one hour off to rest. He is tolerating my milk very well. Today they began adding a breast milk fortifier to his feedings. This fortifier will add a few calories and some extra calcium to each meal. Several of you have asked about his current weight. Caleb was weighted this weekend and he weighs 2lb 13oz so he has lost very little from his birth weight of 2lb 15.6oz. Progress Report: As of August 30th, Caleb is doing great! He started on his mommy's milk today through a feeding tube and is doing well. There is no sign of the infection he had at birth and He is breathing more and more on his own. Praise God! He is a strong little boy and all the hospital staff comment on how well he is doing. Caleb, What a handsome little man you are. I know you were born with a warriors soul and a lions heart. You are a blessing from God, given to your Mom and Dad by our loving Lord to raise in his image. Stay strong little man, you are loved more than you will ever know by your family and your home-group family. Charles and Becky, we are so proud and so happy for you guys. Focus you eyes on the Lord, stay close to him and he will take care of your little man. Heather, Gray, Laken, Gunner and I are all hear for you and are praying for your family. Charles, Becky & Caleb, You are on our hearts everyday. We are praying for you all. We all have that common bound, the love we all share for our children, it is indescribable, we can not even begin to know the Love our LORD has for us. God is so good! Caleb is so sweet. Like any true Crawford baby, that kid's got hair!! Even though premature!! Proves that we Crawford's develop hair before anything else, then a brain, and then good looks! Charles and Becky, I am so happy for you both. And I am so thankful to God that he blessed you both with a happy and healthy little boy. The pictures are great. I really didn't expect to find any when I clicked on the website. I will continue to pray for all of you but especially for Caleb's continued good health.
