My dearest nephew Caleb, I just want you to know what a joy it was for me to meet you the other day. I am so thankful to God for blessing our family with the wonderful gift of you and feel honored and priveledged to have had the opportunity to celebrate your first birthday. Look what the Lord has done!! You are so handsome and so smart, but even more importantly, you are highly blessed and favored of the Lord. I love you with all of my heart and cannot wait for the day when we live close so I can play with you much more often. Please give your Mommy and Daddy big hugs and kisses (I love them very much) and tell them to give you GREAT BIG hugs and kisses from me, your Uncle Fabian, and your best cousin Isaiah. Caleb!! Your Nana is in shock at how much you are growing. I haven't seen you in a few weeks, and I think that you have become a big boy all of a sudden. You are such a handsome boy (don't let that compliment go to your head! Ha!) and will have the girls chasing you down. Seriously, your Nana loves you so much!!! The Lord Jesus loves you too, and He has His Hand on you at all times. I pray that He continue to bless you with strength for crawling and walking and talking and, in general, having the most blessed of days. Update-July 29,2007: I can't tell you how great our little boy is doing. God has blessed this little boy so much! He is healthy and is making incredible progress. As parents, it has been an amazing journey with Caleb. We have seen God's goodness and faithfulness to us through the past eleven months as Caleb has gone through shadowed valleys and climbed mountain tops. We go to the doctor this week for his checkup and I'll post the results. But as I put up new photos tonight, I couldn't help but reflect at how far God's brought us in the past year. Thanks again for everyone's prayers and support for our little warrior. Charles, Becky, and Caleb

I thought the changing-pad-on-baby thing was a brilliant, brilliant trick y'all came up with, and my first thought was, "We have to do that for Miette!" She's doing the stand-and-cruise thing also, and she seems determined to whack her head on as many hard surfaces as possible.

Update-05/30/2007: Today was our ninth anniversary. We spent the day at Cook Children's so Caleb could have his follow-up bronchoscopy. Other than having to watch two nurses and an anesthesiologist stick my kid four times trying to get an IV in an arm or leg, the day was a good one. Dr. Pfaff said that Caleb's throat looked great with no sign of the growth coming back. Praise God!! In fact, he told us that he doesn't expect that we'll have to come back in six weeks as previously thought. Caleb continues to be our miracle baby. The hardest part for him was the IV's and no food for eight hours. The nurse gave him his first apple juice and all was well in Caleb land once again. We are so thankful for the continued prayers of our family and friends. Visit us again soon! Charles, Becky, and Caleb

Update - 05/02/2007: I can't tell you how great it is to see our little boy thriving. What a blessing! He has fully recovered from his surgery and his breathing has dramatically improved. In fact, I kept checking on him the first few nights because he no longer makes noise when he breathes. He has also discovered his voice with full effect. He is one loud kid! He went to the doctor yesterday and weighed in at a hefty 20 lbs. .5 oz. The doctor said no more weight gainer fornula for Caleb. He can also start on solid foods so we begin with cereal this week. God is so great and we have truly felt His presence throughout our trying times with Caleb. Charles, Becky, and Caleb

Update- 04/22/2007: We would first like to thank you all so much for your prayers and concern for Caleb these last few weeks. We got home on Friday so sorry we are late with our update as you can imagine things have been kind of crazy. After the flexible bronchoscopy test on Wednesday, we were told that Caleb had a growth in his airway, which is called a subglottic hemangioma. The name sounds scary but really, it is just a raised birthmark. I’m sure you have seen kids with hemangiomas but you may not have known what they were called. They look like a raised red area and are often called a strawberry birthmark. It is somewhat rare to find them in the airway but our little Caleb has one. He didn’t have one on his skin or I think they may have suspected this earlier. To give you an idea of the breathing difficulty he was having they described his airway as being about the size of a drinking straw and the growth being the side of a BB. We spent the night at Cooks on Wednesday and on Thursday he had surgery to laser down the growth. He came out of surgery just fine and was smiling as always. He seems to be recovering quickly but will need to remain on steroids for a few more days to keep the swelling down. Over all he is doing well but we can tell he isn’t quite himself yet. We feel very blessed that we ended up at Cook’s because if this wasn’t caught in time he may have had to have a tracheotomy. Caleb will need to have another flexible bronchoscopy in six weeks to be sure, the growth has not re-grown which is not uncommon but if that happens as long as they catch it early they can once again laser it back down. We were so happy with the care Caleb received at Cooks and we highly recommend the hospital and more importantly the people who make that place so special. He does still have laryngomalacia and we were able to find out that his case is moderate to mild which is great news. The best news of all is that both the surgeon and the Pulmonologist we met at Cooks felt that the advice we received from the Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctor was a little extreme. They did advise us to be reasonably careful with Caleb but that the complete quarantine was not necessary. We are going to need some time to pray about how and when to introduce Caleb into society but we are excited to get out there and live. God has been so good to our family and we feel so blessed. Update - 04/15/2007: We spent two days back in the hospital this week. Caleb got croup and that combined with his laryngomalacia started to shut down his little airway. We went to Cook's where a little medicine and a LOT of prayer finally brought our little boy home. He's on steroid treatment to keep the swelling down but is doing much better. Thanks to all who lifted up prayers for our family. Thanks most to God who had the situation totally under control from the start. We give Him glory!! Charles, Becky, and Caleb.

Update 4/10/2007: Friends and Family, we wanted to update you on our little warrior. We found out on Friday that Caleb has a condition called Laryngomalacia. This means that Caleb's epiglottis (the flap between your trachea and esophagus) is not fully formed and is not as rigid as it should be. This is what has caused his wheezing (air causing the floppy epiglottis to vibrate). The Doctor says it usually heals itself by the time Caleb is 18 months old. The problem is that Caleb must stay healthy for the next year as any illness that causes swelling in the throat can shut off Caleb's airway resulting in an instant highspeed trip to the emergency room for either an endotracheal tube or a tracheotomy. The Doctor ORDERED us to keep him in isolation from other children and anyplace he has the potential to get sick. He told us to become hermits and keep Caleb at home for the next YEAR! He can be around healthy adults but no kids. It also means no church or home group or any public outings with a risk of getting any kind of infection. This is obviously devastating news to parents who have just spent the past six months in similar isolation and were just now looking to the freedom of introducing our family back into a social life. Now in the midst of all this, let me say this: God is a GREAT God!! We know and believe that He HAS taken care of us, that He IS taking care of us, and that He WILL take care of us! I give Him glory for Caleb's life and the journey He has taken our family on. It is a testimony we tell proudly, because it is a story of God's faithfulness to us and His blessing upon our family. We don't share this news to tell you about "bad luck" that has befallen us. We share it with you to direct your prayers and to let you know where God can (and will) move in our lives. We have always believed that God has made Caleb a "finisher" for our family. That is who the Caleb of the Bible was and we gave him this name knowing that our Caleb would be the same. We look forward to seeing God finish His work in Caleb. Please pray for our son and let's all watch together as God moves past medical names and definitions and even timelines to work wonders in the little boy we have all come to love.
