3/05/2009 ~ Anhinga Trail/Eastern Everglades & Key Largo

We made an early start from Manasota Key as we knew we had a 300-mile drive to the Florida Keys where we had an overnight reserved at the Lime Tree Bay Resort on Long Key. We made the drive down to the Everglades where we headed east across their northern fringe, turning south again near Homestead. We made an early afternoon stop at the Royal Palm portion of the Everglades National Park where we walked the famed Anhinga Trail. This is a part of Florida that must not be missed by any nature-minded individual! In fact, if you could only visit one portion of the massive Everglades National Park, make it the Anhinga Trail! You won't be disappointed! Following that, we headed south on US-1 and drove across the causeway to Key Largo on our way to our destination, Long Key. On Key Largo we stopped at the Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center where we visited with one of the best research and bird rescue centers in North America. Why, we even showed up in time for dinner! Pelican Dinner, that is! Everyday at 3:30 pm, the researchers at the center bring buckets of herring to a little shore called Pelican Landing where they are met by nearly 150 wild Brown Pelicans from the Gulf who have come to expect the feeding. This allows them to supplement their diet while allowing the rescuers to inspect them for injuries and illness. I truly learned the meaning of the term "Feeding Frenzy" at this time! We headed west on US-1 to our resort. After checking in, a quick visit to Long Key State Park was followed by a golden sunset over the Gulf and then a tasty meal at the Green Turtle Inn on Islamorada.
