Sadly, Laupahoehoe is where a tsunami came ashore in 1946. There used to be a school that was built on this peninsula and the resulting victims were mostly school children and their teachers.

If you look closely, you can see the names and ages of those that were lost. Most were teenagers, several were brothers.
