Hawaii's Humpback Whales

Hawaii is the primary mating and birthing grounds for the Northern Pacific Humpback whales. They migrate each fall from the cold water feeding grounds of Alaska to give birth in Hawaii's warm waters. During their time here, they are either birthing or mating.

It is extremely rare for a female to give birth and to mate in the same year as it is physically taxing to the mother. For the females, it is not uncommon for them to lose over 1/3 of their body weight due to the fasting as well as the feeding of their newborn calves. For a female raise a calf as well as the demands put on her body during gestation period would be physically challenging.

In ancient Hawaii the humpback whale was known by the name of Kohola. The humpback whale is the only whale known to sing. Their songs are beautiful as well as haunting and can be heard for miles underwater. It is also interesting to note that humpback whales around the world sing different songs. The songs of the different populations around the world have notable variations from one another. Scientists are still doing research to gain a better understanding as to the meanings of the songs.
