Hawaii Superferry

Many of you may not know, nor care, about the Hawaii Superferry, but there is a lot of controversy surrounding this upstart ferry service that is scheduled to link the Hawaiian islands with a method of transportation other than the interisland airlines.

Today was the first day of it's return to service after a court ordered cease of operations due to the Superferry's "illegal" operation. Because it's initial operation violated state law, the state passed an emergency bill that changed the law to allow the Superferry to run.

With the initial reactions on Kaua'i and Maui to the Superferry's operation, the state has made a portion (not all) of the harbor an exclusion zone for a time period prior to and after the ferry's arrival and departure. Many of the protesters believe that the ferry will cause injuries to marine mammals (mainly the North Pacific Humpback's), will encourage invasive species cause pollution due to sewage discharges and increase the drug problems of the islands.

I think it is absurdly ironic that the people are protesting the Superferry with concern to whale strikes and pollution, but not the cruise industry which runs much larger ships, as shown in one of the photo's below. The ferry is powered by water jet drives and has sewage holding tanks. The cruise ship is powered by propellers and has a history of sewage discharge issues.

Lynch me now, but 5 years from now when people are able to find a cure for their cranial rectal inversions, they will say "What did we ever do before the ferry?".

Personally, I support the ferry's operation. Yes, I think the state did some sketchy bill passing to get it in operation, but I still support it. This gallery though is for those who exercised their right to the 1st amendment. I don't agree with their position, but I agree they have the right to say it... all except for the woman holding the sign that has the Governor in a Nazi uniform... WTF? Someone get her a crow bar and help her remove her head from her backside.

Most photo's have some sort of captions if you go through them.
