Welcome to Bubble Gum Alley in San Luis Obispo in California. This ia a place that is definitely not for the squeamish. This unique gallery of Americana is the handiwork of the students of Cal Poly Tech and other passers-by heading to the bars and shops on Higuera Street through a mid-block alleyway. Supposedly starting in the 1960's, wads of gum have been stuck on the side walls of this alley until the walls were completely covered up to about 10 feet high. The gum and whatever else that was applied with it has hardened into a 50 foot long chewing gum art gallery. The creativity used in some contributions to the walls is truly amazing. You can see coins stuck inside petrified gum at many places along the wall. You can add to the evolving gum portrait whenever you wish but don't wait too long as there is a rumor that the building on one side of the alley may be razed soon as it is not earthquake proof. My apologies to the pedestrians using Bubble Gum Alley back on July 23rd for the tripod obstacle course.

esme12,
The alley connected a parking lot and a busy business street. During the 1 1/2 hours I was shooting there, about 30 people came through the alley heading to restaurants and stores.

A new form of graffitti I suppose or the 15 minutes of fame! Does the alley lead into a prep school or court or something? v
