Carduus nutans
(Nodding Thistle)

Roadside in Davidson County

You will not walk through a patch of Thistle without
knowing it. A native biennial of Eurasia but widely
established in the US and Canada. It can be found
in the toughest conditions thriving in gravel, thin
dry soil and waste places. Spiny hair-like bristles
are barbed so they have a tendency to cling. From 1'
-7' tall (cut them and they keep coming back) with
sparse leaves in the upper end of the stem blooming
profusely from May through to a freeze in the Fall.
