Just a Touch...

OK... it is mostly B&W. I have been studying the work of Andre' Gallant. It's not a new process that he uses but it does make for an interesting artistic presentation. I took his process (described in Outdoor Photographer / August 2005 ed.) and tweaked it to work with my B&W month.

Basically it is two images. The first image is with the subject focused and overexposed two stops. The second is off focus and f/2.8 for the shallow DOF. The off focus blurs and enlarges the color. Layers are combined and the off focus layer's opacity is adjusted.

Andre' does this with slides but admits having to overcome Newton Ring issues with the combined slides. This is not a problem with digital images or digitally scanned ones which he is now using.

I had to add the steps on the two images of desaturation using Channel Mixer in Monochrome and History Brush tool on the out of focus one before combining the two images and flattening the layers together.

Andre' Gallant's book can be found on Amazon. It is called Dreamscapes. Also check out Photo Impressionism and Subjective Matter for another good viewing/read. Both can be found together for a deal at this link... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0973471409/qid=1124973756/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-8435715-5552619?v=glance&s=books

Interesting technique, something I'll have to look into. Of course at first I thought this was just a selective color image, but obviously so much more. In epxerimenting with this, you've come out with great results. Thanks for introducing this technique and providing details, much appreciated! :)

Good work, sort of like it, it's growing on me. You could enlarge the blur by using the lens filter in PS, this may help the green stand out a little more. Now off to find the book or other examples!
