May 29

Roadside in Pegram, Tennessee

Carduus nutans (Nodding Thistle) is a native of Eurasia imported into the US and considered a pest by many. It has a spiny stem and leaves. They usually grow about 4 or 5 feet tall with terminal flower heads of numerous reddish-purple flowers. It is the only Thistle of the genus Carduus but there are seven species from the Cirsium genus in Tennessee.

Very nice. Wish we had some. I believe they grow well in Scotland.
